Understand your money, don’t just track it

February 28th, 2007 by Shashank

You asked for it, and now you have it! We released a bunch of tools for you to be able to understand your expenses, and drill down into your transactions to see where exactly your money is being spent.

Expense Categorization

Categorize your expenses

Look at how much you spent across different keywords, or within different groups. A nice looking pie chart helps you quickly summarize what you are spending most on. Very helpful for getting a quick feel of where the money is going out of your wallet. You can then drill down further into transactions within a particular category.

Expense Trend

Compare trends in your spending pattern

View daily and monthly trends in the way you spend money. Our innovative technology lets you easily visualize the days and months where you had an irregular spending pattern. Look out for spikes and anomalies in the graph, and simply click on the graph to see which transactions cost you the most.

There are more feature to be discovered, just play around with the tools and find out which one suits you the best. There’s more coming your way soon!

Is there a bug list for Buxfer ..? It seems to have swapped my Owe and Paid columns around …

  4. Buxfer Team Says:

Hi Jonathan - Buxfer does not currently support adding “earning” type of transactions, which is where your confusion was created. We are soon going to add these features, so stay tuned! We’ve sent you a detailed email as well. Hope that clarifies things.

  5. Buxfer Team Says:

Oh, and for reporting bugs, you can just click on the Feedback link which appears on the top of all pages on Buxfer. Thanks!

  6. PK Says:

what about privacy concerns, this is web based correct? That means that anyone can hack and know your personal expenses, etc.

  7. Shashank Says:

    PK,

Yes this is web-based. There are two parts to the privacy problem you mention:

    a) You don’t want your data to be hacked out of Buxfer’s database: We have means to ensure that. Being CS PhD students does help :)

    b) You don’t want to share your data even with Buxfer: That’s a more difficult problem to solve. This is a standard debate topic about Web services in general: accessibility v/s privacy. All I can say is that your emails, search queries, credit card statements, etc. are already sitting in someone’s DB out of your control. So you got to trust companies which are offering these services.

But why you will trust a newbie like Buxfer? Well, a bunch of poor students working overtime to build and maintain a useful service for others probably won’t do you any harm :)

I would urge you to start playing around with our service a bit, and see how committed we are to building strong relationships with our users. Trust will naturally come out of the experience we try to provide you while using Buxfer. So please do try us out for a while, and then let go if you still aren’t able to trust us.
