Towards fully automatic categorization
April 29th, 2007 by ShashankWe have released a set of new exciting features.
Automatic categorization: Our users liked the pie charts, but that required pain-staking tagging of all transactions. We tried to reduce the pain with automatic tag rules, but that’s still work! Now we have moved one step closer to our goal of making our users do zero work. Buxfer now automatically classifies your transactions into hierarchical categories. We are continuously working to improve our categorizations. Meanwhile, if you feel unhappy with a category Buxfer has chosen for some transactions, you can always use tagging (and auto-tagging) to help get even better classifications.
Budgeting and deals: We’d like to help our users save money, not just track it. So, we’ve added two new features to the mix.
- Budgets: You can now create budgets on Buxfer. Tell us how much you’d like to spend on certain tags for a month, and if you go overbudget, we will send you an alert! Make sure you don’t spend $200 on coffee every month :)
- Deals: Everybody likes a bargain. And we know our users will be no exception. Buxfer now shows deals related to your transactions, so you know (a) whether you got a good deal on your purchase or not, and (b) how you could save on related future purchases. We make no money from any of the referrals - they are just there since we believe they will help users save money!
We hope you will find the new features exciting and useful. As always, don’t forget to let us know what we’ve missed! Oh, and you can now chat live with the Buxfer founders in case you think we’ve gotten slower with our email replies. :)

Hey,
I was just introduced to your tool by a colleague of mine. I saw some very kewl features (Actually, I was trying to write an offline tool that does exactly all that you have done - only I am a few years late! :( ). Kudos, on such a kewl tool.
I wanted to know if you provide an APIs. I was thinking of an offline version that allows me to push data into ur tool. (like something sitting in the taskbar/firefox toolbar and allowing me to report transactions)
I understand you have an import format already, so I know I can use that, but it would be kewl, if the tool can sync with my account automatically.
Another idea, I had, was to integrate it with say gmail (using greasemonkey)

We are working on the API and automatic syncing. The latter should be available pretty soon. The greasemonkey integration is a nifty idea, but we’ll just let our users handle that once we release an API.

Are you guys worried about mint?

Hi,
Do you guys offer any widgets/extensions? Such as one for Netvibes/Firefox?
Also, great work - I was trying out BillMonk - but found the requirement to provide an e-mail address for a contact downright annoying.

Ashish:
We do have a google widget, which can be embedded in any webpage. Take a look at: http://gmodules.com/ig/creator?url=http://www.buxfer.com/public/buxfer-gadget.xml&synd=open&w=320&h=200&title=Buxfer%3A+Track+Your+Money
And thanks for the kind words. We hope you continue to find Buxfer useful.

Buxfer Team,
First of all I want to congratulate you for the site. Buxfer is a very useful service, quickly and efficient.
I’m developing a web 2.0 service and I would like to know how Buxfer integrates Google Orkut’s account with Buxfer. Where can I find more information about this integration? I search on google, but i didn’t found it.

Jonas,
Glad to hear that you find Buxfer useful!
Regarding Orkut integration: we tried searching for an API kind of thing, but I don’t think there is one. So unfortunately, we had to go with the Plaxo-style screen scraping method.
Hope that helps!
