Multiple accounts are here!

August 19th, 2007 by Shashank

We have finally added support for multiple accounts and account balances within Buxfer. Now, you can segregate your expenses into different accounts - e.g., bank, credit-cards, etc. By default, all your expenses and incomes are logged into a “Cash account”. You can also move around transactions between various accounts to your heart’s wish. With each account, you can also see the associated balance (income - expense) which allows you to quickly understand how much money you have left in your coffers.

A thank you is in order for a lot of our patient users. This has been a feature demanded from quite some time. We apologize for taking so long to bring this feature to you. Hopefully, we will do a much better job from now on. So please keep your suggestions flooding in.

Thank you for this great feature. I just love it. A small enhancement may make this as even better.

You may like to all transfer between different accounts. For example If I want to transfer some money from A account to B account, right now I have to make two enteries. It will be great if we are able to transfer within accounts.

I hope I’m not missing something really obvious, but I can’t find where to create multiple accounts?

  3. Brad Says:

Ha! Found it. I had no transactions; so the option wasn’t there. May want to make the option appear even if you have no transactions (for new users trying to set up their initial accts.).

  4. Ashwin Says:

Hey Brad: thanks for the suggestion. We added it right away, although it took me quite some time to post here :P

Multiple accounts is a good feature, but with no ability to transfer money from one to another, it is not so useful.
I have one more suggestion: is it possible to implement ability to have different currencies for different accounts? This would be extremely useful for me - I have bank account in dollars, but all cash in roubles (still common situation in Russia, unfortunately).
Sometime I’ve developed a budgetting program with such feature: there was a list of currencies (one of them was “home” or base currecy, all other had exchange rate) and each account had its own currency. When transferring money, user had to enter amount only for the source account - necessary amount for the target was calculated automatically (using exchange rates), or the user would switch off automatic calculation and enter both amounts manually.

  6. Ashwin Says:

@dmych: regarding account transfer, we know it’s quite an important limitation. Stay tuned, the feature should be available in the next few days.

Having different currencies per account: that’s a great idea. We are working on that as well - sadly, it’s a little bit below in our TODO list, so I cannot give a precise estimate on when it will happen. :(

@Ashwin: Good news. :) I’ll wait of course.

  8. Prashant Says:

    Hey Ashwin

waiting for transfer between accounts ?
    what’s the plan?

  9. Prashant Says:

    Hi
    one question…
suppose i paid from my bank account a shared expense of 400 out of which i have to take 300 from my friends. but in my account detail, its showing -100 as expense and +300 as impact and showing current balance as
    new balance = old balance - 100
which according to me should be
new balance = old balance - 400 (since my friends will pay me later)
and when my friends pay me then that should add 300 to my bank account.

    Hope somebody answer this.

@Prashant: your point is very valid. And we ourselves encountered this inconsistency. This will be resolved in the next release. We expect the new release to happen in the next week sometime. There are a lot of interesting and powerful new features we are adding (along with some re-design) that’s causing the large delay so far. I hope you’ll be patient.

  11. Prashant Says:

now thats a quick reply :)
for new features i can definitely wait some time..
one more thing why dont you add accounts tab in left pane with groups, contact, tags.

    thanks

  12. Prashant Says:

    waiting for the next release….:)

  13. Phoenix Says:

    Hi

All my tags are in the same color! How do I change that?? :-\

  14. Anonymous Says:

Is there a way to group accounts - savings, checking, creditcard, retirement, investments … could you point me to a link describing how to setup
If not that’ll be a useful feature in a future release

  15. Max Soe Says:

I accidently deleted my cash account. How do I get it back? (or set up a new one)

  16. Marco Says:

Is there a way to have a transaction span on multiple accounts? It can be useful if I paid something using different sources, for example paying a bill using credit cards and leaving money as a tip to the waiter, or so.
