Income analysis, transaction splits and more …
January 27th, 2008 by ShashankYesterday, we released a bunch of cool, new features which many of you had been asking for:
- Income analysis: In addition to analyzing where your money is being spent, you can also analyze how you are earning it. This feature is for the wealthy few who have so many sources of incomes that they want to analyze them :)
- Transaction splits: You can divide the total expense you incurred for a transaction in your bank statement across different tags. Especially useful for those supermarket purchases, where you buy a whole lot of diverse products (clothes, grocery, etc.)
- Tag import: Moving towards better, easier and more automatic categorization, we have compiled a list of popular tags alongwith keywords relevant for those tags. For example, the tag ‘Internet’ is associated with the keyword ‘comcast’, and will be automatically applied to any transaction matching ‘comcast’. As and when you enter new transactions (via manual import or auto-synchronization), we match your transactions with this list of tags and recommend relevant ones to you. You can also find the ‘Import tags’ link on the ‘Manage tags’ page listing all of your tags.
The screenshot above shows some tags relevant to the transactions in my personal account, you will get personalized recommendations based on your transactions - Amount search: You can type in a query like ‘amount:243.92′ to find all transactions with an expense or income of $243.92. Quite useful when you are trying to recollect what that age-old undescriptive transaction in your bank statement really was!
Enjoy! :)

I love your site and how much you keep adding to it!
I would never even look at Microsoft Money if it weren’t for the cashflow forecast. It really helps me plan things out. I hope you can add something similar, in the future.

The new features, especially the split feature, are working great! Thanks for the new updates.
Do you guys plan to add any reporting features or possibly an API so users can apply for an API key to possibly create their own reports.
Thanks again for a great financial app.

Charlie,
We do provide ways for you to download your transactions and analysis — just click on the ‘Download’ link on those pages. We also recently added a feature where we send you a weekly financial statement summarizing transactions for the last week.
In case these reports don’t suffice, please do email us with what more you would like to see in the reports, or what API functionality you would like us to expose.
Thanks! :)

Actually, I can probably create the report that I need with the transaction download, sorry I did not even think about that before. I can download that list and then whip something up to read that data and generate the report I am looking for. The only problem is the way the export handles splits.
As for the reporting feature, the report I was looking to create would be a budget report. The basic functionality would include creating a monthly (current month, or custom date) report of your budgeted items. I guess it would be very similar to what you see when you click on the budgets link but the columns would be sortable and display: budget category, tags, budgeted amount, actual spent and difference. The existing functionality of allowing the user to click the budget item/category and get a page displaying the transactions for that budget category. Also, there would be a link at the top of the page what link (and a total sum) to a page with all of the transactions that do not match any of the budget categories. Not really sure if this would be a modification of the current budget page/functionality or if it would fall under a new “reports†section.
Here is a link to a mock up I made to show what I was thinking about for the report.

As for the API, I am sure there are more advanced reasons that other people would want it, but for my purposes, it would be cool if there were some web services that would allow someone to query the transaction data, tags, etc. so that I could create customized reports.
Anyway, just some ideas…

Hi there!
I’ve run into a bit of a snag while using the “Split/Itemize” feature - but I can’t tell whether the wall I’ve run into is because I’m trying to do something extraordinary, or whether it’s a limitation of the software that should be “fixed”. :-)
So, here’s the scenario:
I go to Target and spend $20 on CDs. Normally, I would use Buxfer’s multi-tag power to tag my purchase with “media” (money i spend each on music and movie purchases and rentals), and also with “CDs” (because i’ve been interested to see the trends in my purchasing as I shift from CD and DVD purchases & rentals toward a digital-media lifestyle. I would mark an iTunes purchase with “media” and “iTunes”).
So, I’m all good so far - but what if I add $20 worth of chips and soda to my cart for tonight’s party?
Ideally, I would be able to itemize my Target purchase as:
$20 - Groceries
$20 - Media, CDs
… but currently, I am unable to add more than one tag to a line item. I receive a warning that the tag “Media, CDs” is invalid because it contains a comma. (Buxfer is regarding the whole string as a tag, rather than recognizing I intend it to be read as two separate tags.)
This isn’t a deal-breaker, but asking me to limit each itemization to one tag starts to put a crimp in some of the advanced reporting & tracking I enjoy so much using Buxfer’s tags.
Has anyone else run into this situation?

I have a semi-similar problem that involves splitting transactions and budgets. I’ll explain my problem with an example. Say I went shopping at walmart and spent $120, $10 of which was on food. I itemize the transaction saying that I spent 10 on food, and all of it shows up as different tags. But then when I go to the budget I’ve set up for food, it adds up all the items with the food tag, so it counts this as $120 instead of $10, making me think I went way over budget. Is there any way around this?
