March 4th, 2008 by Shashank

Google GearsWe just released a brand new mobile interface for Buxfer, which provides offline access to your data with the help of Google Gears for mobile. So you can access Buxfer from your mobile device even when you are not connected to the internet! If you are always on the go, and hate to go online just to check your bank balance, then this is just what you have been looking for. Just point your browser to:

Google Gears is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality. Today, Google released a version of Google Gears for the Windows Mobile platform, and we are glad to launch our offline mobile app in collaboration with Google. Support for more mobile platforms is in the works.

In online mode, the mobile interface lets you access your bank account balances, transactions, and analysis charts. You can add/edit accounts, transactions or tags. You can even synchronize your bank accounts right from your cellphone! More features should be coming your way shortly …

In offline mode, you can access all the above features in a read-only mode. You won’t be able to add new transactions or edit your tags, but you can still view your account balances, recent transactions and analysis charts.

    Jeenu,

Our offline mobile app supports only read-only access to your financial data. Which makes sense in the context of a mobile app, since you are out somewhere and want to have a quick look at your balance, budget, or some recent transaction. For a desktop app, would an offline but read-only version suit your needs? What is the principal reason you want to to access Buxfer offline from your Desktop, and what are the top set of features you want to access in that mode?

Thanks a ton for your feedback! :)

I use buxfer almost daily. I’ve had times where I tried to lookup buxfer only to find that my internet connection is down. Recently were were hit by an under sea cable mishap, and I was out of internet for days. My thought was that, since buxfer is already making use of Google gears to provide read-only access to data, why don’t have it in Desktops as well. I would just like to see the feature in, if that’s not gonna take much :D

From my point of view, the first time I read that buxfer, an accouncy web application, will use Google Gears for offline mode, I thought: “Finally ! I will be able to enter my transactions where and when I wish !” and I immediately created an account.

Then I read this blog describing that it is not possible to create a transaction in offline mode…
    I was disappointed…

Is it a planned feature ? and if yes for when please ?
if it is not planned to add this feature to offline mode, can you explain why please ?

    Thanks in advance

For those of us without 24/7 access to internet year-round — because of travel, connection problems or whatever reason — it would be VERY useful to have an offline version of Buxfer. Read-only offline would be good, and I would use it; editable offline would be great and make this a killer app.

  30. Jeff Says:

…by the way, I’m thinking primarily of offline (read-only or editable) for desktop; offline editable for mobile phone would be great too.
