More ways to dig into your finances

August 15th, 2008 by Shashank

We have added some new and useful reporting tools to the Expense analysis page:

  • Summary view
    Summary view
The summary view gives you a quick snapshot of your financial situation. It shows your categorized income and expenses for the selected period, and also shows how your net worth has evolved during this time.
  • Cash flow projections

Financial planning is not just about analyzing your past spending, but being more proactive and planning out how the future is going to look like. To help you picture what the future has in hold for you, we have introduced the ability to project your net balance at a future point of time based on bill reminders setup by you.

Hope you like the new changes! :)

    Great! :D

Any time I try to do something, I get a dialog box telling me that a new version of Buxfer has arrived and the page will refresh momentarily. It happens if I try to add a tag, expand the details of a transaction… anything. Anyone else having this issue?

  3. Shashank Says:

    Owen,

Sorry about that. That’s a bug we are working on …

Can you try logging out of your account and logging back in? Also, please empty the cache of your browser. If neither helps, please send us an email to support.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused.

    Great job!
That was what I was talking about, what I missed. It’s nice to see my suggestion to come alive :) Keep on the good work! Have a nice day!

  5. Owen Says:

    Shashank,

No dice. I’m still having issues after clearing my browser’s cache and logging back in. I’ll keep an eye out for when you release a patch.

    VERY NICE!

    Two problems, though:

    1. For the cash flow report, how do I add estimated future transactions without duplicating the accurate data my bank will send? I can’t predict what name my bank/the bill will give it, and I can’t accurately predict the amount (although I can get close). I really don’t want a phony transaction showing up, and possibly distracting me from the REAL transaction not showing up (that’s an emergency, it happens and can cost a lot). At the same time, being able to look ahead like this is __really__ useful.

    2. I’ve consistently had a problem where all of the Reports (and the Summary) exclude random tags — they almost always exclude my MonthlyPlan tag, and sometime exclude others as well. No, I don’t have it set up to exclude any tags… And if I switch time periods, it’ll change which categories fail to show. Does anyone else see this?

    William,

For problem 1, you can create a bill reminder with an approximate amount, and uncheck the box saying ‘Add a copy of this bill to my account on the due date’. That way, you get a reminder email, and the cashflow report takes into account this upcoming bill, but no transaction is automatically added. Only the data sent by your bank will be present in your account. Makes sense?

For problem 2, can you send an email to support giving steps to reproduce this problem? Thanks! :)

  8. William Tanksley, Jr Says:

For problem 1: GREAT! I’ll do that. BTW, could I have an option to leave that box unchecked by default?

For problem 2: I’ve send three or four — one was responded to (your people are EXCELLENT), but the guy couldn’t reproduce it.

But I think I’ve figured it out — it seems to be related to staying logged in too long. I’m going to spend some time characterizing it (and getting it to happen again) so that your programmers will have some useful info — in the meantime, I finally can see all my financial data!

  9. Ashwin Says:

Owen: we have fixed the repeating “new version has arrived” issue now. Sorry for the annoyance, and thank you very much for your patience!

  10. Ben Says:

The “projections” feature would be even more useful with a graph!

    :-)

Finally I can see all my finances live at one place. Tried many sites before settling down with buxfer. Multiple currency is the best of all… Couple of suggestions…
    1. Can you include a Networth Calculator as well as a Networth projector?
    2. Transfers in Multiple Currency do not use the conversion factor… Maybe its a bug which you could look to correct
    3. Any chances of using most current Market rate for currency conversion? Avoids repeated efforts to recalculate entries for current market rate…
    4. Any chances of Investment tracker or a Portfolio including Mutual Funds, SIPs, Stocks… where we can define our own percentage? (SIP can also be using reminders and repeating transactions)

Once again… An amazing effort and services… I would rate Buxfer 10 out of 10 as per my needs.

  12. Gustavo Bravetti Says:

I can’t see Upcoming Transactions affecting Projections data, just the first instance of the series.

What I can be doing wrong?

also account filter doesn’t work for Projections or Balance

Thanks in advanced for your help

  13. Gustavo Bravetti Says:

I just realize that upcoming instances appears immediately on balance if first instance due date is lower than now()

  14. Ben Says:

I have to say the projection report is quite nonsense.
Why don’t use a chart to show the incoming balance of each day? With incoming expense data inside please! Tat will help us to plan our expense greatly!
