Secure account synchronization with offline storage for Firefox 3
September 27th, 2008 by ShashankWe have extended the support for automatic account synchronization via offline data storage to Firefox 3 users. Firefox 3 users can store their authentication information locally within their browser, and synchronize their bank accounts without ever having to share their username/password with our server.
Firefox 3 users do NOT need to install Google Gears or any other extension, since Firefox 3 has built-in support for client-side data storage (conforming to the new HTML5 standard)

oh this is good stuff guys! this is why i love Buxfer. you always take the first jump into new technology and do it right….while keeping users security a top priority. The iPhone app is awesome and now that I can use FireFox 3 with offline data storage with Buxfer I will feel more comfortable with adding my bank and savings accounts (currently only tracking credit card).
Buxfer rocks!

I have been using the every-night sync, but now that I know Firefox 3 will let me save it offline without using Google Gears, I’ll start using that. My question is, since I used to use the server-stored info, does Buxfer still have that info stored, or is it completely removed now that I changed?

Brian,
Did you click on ‘Delete stored data’ before switching to offline sync? If so, your data will be completely deleted from our server.

That help doesn’t seem to accurately describe how Buxfer works. I wish it did.
It says that “Next time you click on ‘Synchronize’, Buxfer will use the information stored offline, and you don’t need to type it again.” In practice, though, this simply doesn’t work; I have to type my login information every time, all three accounts. Nightly and every-login work, but I will NEVER trust software to make entries for me without giving me the opportunity to review them (I’ve already received a couple of FAR backdated entries that I would have never known about if I hadn’t reviewed every item).
What am I doing wrong?

Wm,
“Every-login” and “offline sync” are the same thing. When you hit synchronize, you have to select the “every-login” option to store data offline. The every-login mechanism asks your permission before starting the sync, and lets you review added transactions once the sync is over. Have you tried it out once?

Shashank: COOL! It works. Yes, I did try that back when it was first implemented; it didn’t take me to the data loading screen, it just put a spinner up in the top until it was done. Very confusing. Maybe that was a bug, or maybe my browser just crashed.
I really like how the “every login” feature works; that’s exactly what I want.

Wm,
Yeah, it was a very bad implementation I had done initially. But its been a while since I improved it to work the way it does now. Glad you liked it! :)
